About Tofino

Tofino is 40 km northwest of Ucluelet, 126 km west of Port Alberni, and 316 km northwest of Victoria. It is located in a geographical region called Clayoquot Sound. With a population of just under 2,000 permanent residents, Tofino welcomes between 750,000 and a million visitors annually. The recognition of Clayoquot Sound by the United Nations as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in January 2000 is the region’s most recent international distinction, recognizing the area as one of unparalleled natural and cultural riches.

Located in a temperate oceanic zone, Tofino has mild winters and summers. The west coast area of Vancouver Island is packed with beaches, parks, and waterfront promenades. The current town site of Tofino was officially established in 1909 on the Esowista peninsula. The village of Tofino was first incorporated in 1932. In 1959 a long-awaited logging road was punched through the mountains between Port Alberni and the coast. Today, Tofino is a tourism hotspot with a thriving local economy.
